The road to becoming a deacon is different for everybody.  For Danny May the road has included many helpful experiences.  These include being a singer in a gospel quartet, being a trustee, and growing up in the church where he was ordained.  Danny is one of the newest deacons at Sunshine Freewill Baptist Church in Huntington WV.  He was ordained in the Brotherhood Conference at Sunshine on January 13th, 2001.  But this was not just the beginning, it was the end of a journey which began at Sunshine when he was around 8 years old.

At 8 years old, Danny began to attend Sunshine because it was within walking distance of his house.  He was saved at the church in 1961 when he was 15 years old.  At this age Danny was also beginning to learn what it took to be a deacon.  His father, Russell May, was a deacon at that time and served for many years.

On August 7, 1965 Danny was married to Elaine Meadows.  Marrying Elaine also brought another good example into his life.  Elaine’s father, Ed Meadows, was a deacon at Ward Road Freewill Baptist Church in Canvas, WV.  The influences of both his father and his father-in-law were a real blessing to Danny and have already helped him in understanding the role of a deacon.

Danny began to take on other roles soon after becoming married, and one of those was becoming a father.  Cindy was the first to arrive, followed by Candy and Steve.  All three of his children now attend Sunshine, but most importantly they are all Christians.  Danny’s two son-in-laws are also Christians and that is something he praises God for.

Danny began to understand what it was like to serve the church through music.  He was a member of the Peacemakers quartet for many years and still enjoys singing very much.  He also has learned to serve the church through being a trustee.  He has served on the trustee board at Sunshine for about 10 years and this has helped to prepare him to be a deacon because of the trust the people of the church have built up in him.  Danny also serves as an assistant Sunday School teacher and has served as a teacher in the Sunday School department for many years teaching in the teen class, the career class, and an adult Sunday School class.  Danny is very happy to be a deacon and says, “I hope that I can be a servant to the church.”  If his past is any indication, he won’t have any trouble doing that.
